SUMMARY:One in Five: Addressing the Needs of Caregiving Students in Postsecondary Education
DESCRIPTION:Caregivers form a key constituency of current\, potential\, and returning college students\, with around one in five undergraduates having legal dependents. Students who take care of children and other family members face greater barriers to education than their peers without caregiving responsibilities\, impacting their ability to access and complete a postsecondary credential\, with intergenerational implications. Increasing degree attainment among U.S. adults requires alleviating the barriers caregivers face—financial insecurity\, time poverty\, and decreased sense of belonging—improving their ability to complete a credential and to do so sooner with less debt. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Carrie R. Welton (Policy Strategist) and May Helena Plumb (Research Associate) explore recent data on caregiving students from the Fall 2024 Student Financial Wellness Survey and highlight strategies for institutions\, states\, and the federal government to invest in the modern learner.

SUMMARY:Earn and Learn: Employment Opportunities While Enrolled
DESCRIPTION:Modern Learners: Navigating Multiple Personas and Commitments \n\n\n\nIn our third season of the 360 Discussion Series\, we will dive deeper into what shapes the postsecondary lifestyle of the modern learner. We will explore factors impacting the pursuit and completion rate of these students.  \n\n\n\nThis is the third discussion in our current 360 Discussion Series on Modern Learners: Navigating Multiple Personas and Commitments.  \n\n\n\nThe findings of our 2023 Student Financial Wellness Survey show 38% of respondents consider themselves workers attending school rather than students who work. Trying to fit academics around a work schedule can create competing priorities and force these modern learners to regularly choose between needs and goals. In this discussion\, we will talk about ways in which a postsecondary credential can be achieved while working. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterested in More? \n\n\n\n\n\nThanks for Attending Our Virtual Webinar \n\n\n\nTrellis Strategies is a strategic research and consulting firm dedicated to advancing postsecondary education and strengthening the workforce by delivering unparalleled insights into the student experience\, from application through graduation.  \n\n\n\n\nGet In Touch

SUMMARY:Student Basic Needs and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Modern Learners: Navigating Multiple Personas and Commitments \n\n\n\nIn our third season of the 360 Discussion Series\, we will dive deeper into what shapes the postsecondary lifestyle of the modern learner. We will explore factors impacting the pursuit and completion rate of these students.  \n\n\n\nThis is the second discussion in our current series on Modern Learners: Navigating Multiple Personas and Commitments. \n\n\n\nOur 2023 Student Financial Wellness Survey findings tell us 42 percent of students facing basic needs insecurities simultaneously experience major depressive disorder (compared to 20 percent of their counterparts without food or housing related challenges).  \n\n\n\nSimilarly\, 53 percent of students with basic needs insecurity had a positive screen for generalized anxiety disorder through the GAD-2 (versus 29 percent of those without basic needs security issues).  \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the connection between basic needs and mental health on student success.

SUMMARY:Perceptions of Institutional Support
DESCRIPTION:It is important for institutions to understand their students’ barriers and struggles and provide crucial support services as needed. Students who feel connected to and supported by their institution develop a stronger sense of belonging. The Trellis Strategies Student Financial Wellness Survey asks students about their perceptions of institutional support\, such as making costs more affordable and institutional awareness of their financial difficulties. This webinar will provide an overview of the data from the fall 2023 survey and showcase campuses that received high scores on institutional support.
