SUMMARY:The Hidden Educational Barrier: Public Benefit Programs
DESCRIPTION:Many people from low-income backgrounds face significant barriers accessing and completing postsecondary credentials. Socioeconomic barriers include affordability challenges and insufficient financial aid that was built on assumptions of parental support\, as well as a lack of advocacy and awareness needed to navigate complex systems. A lesser understood barrier is the way that public benefit programs not only hinder access and completion of credentials and degrees but how they actively prevent it. \n\n\n\nJoin us to better understand how restrictions on education in public benefit programs cut off pathways that can move people from poverty to prosperity. We will discuss how public benefits and postsecondary education intersect as well as opportunities that exist to reduce barriers across policies and programs. \n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nCarrie Welton\, Senior Policy Strategist\, Trellis Strategies

SUMMARY:The Loneliness Epidemic on College Campuses
DESCRIPTION:Loneliness among American adults has increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 36 percent of all Americans\, including 61 percent of young adults (aged 18-25)\, report feeling lonely frequently or almost all the time or all the time. The 2024 Student Financial Wellness Survey demonstrates the “loneliness epidemic” extends to students. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will share how colleges and universities can promote positive mental health and reduce loneliness among students by fostering social connection\, developing or enhancing low-cost or no-charge counseling and mental health services\, and creating supportive\, inclusive environments. \n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nAllyson Cornett\, Director of Research\, Trellis Strategies

SUMMARY:From “Work First” to Workforce First Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Federal and state governments invest billions of dollars each year in higher education and workforce development programs to expand access to education and training. Yet research shows personal financial circumstances and the need to work significantly affect people’s ability to enroll and stay enrolled. When individuals cannot afford tuition and cover basic expenses\, they miss out on gaining the skills and credentials employers require. As a result\, those public investments fail to translate into higher earnings\, increased tax revenue\, stronger economic stability\, or reduced use of public benefits. \n\n\n\nPublic benefit programs are intended to help people meet basic needs while working toward economic independence. However\, many of these programs restrict education\, creating barriers that deter\, delay\, or deny access to pathways proven to lead to higher wages\, greater tax contributions\, and lower unemployment and poverty rates. \n\n\n\nJoin us to learn more about this research and explore how some states treat public benefits as tools for success rather than obstacles by aligning benefit policies to support education\, completion\, and workforce participation. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nJennifer Stiddard\, Senior Director in Policy & Advocacy\, Jobs For the Future (JFF)\n\n\n\n\n\nCaroline Treschitta\, Senior Government Affairs Manager\, National Skills Coalition\n\n\n\n\n\nCarrie R. SUMMARY:One in Five: Addressing the Needs of Caregiving Students in Postsecondary Education
DESCRIPTION:Caregivers form a key constituency of current\, potential\, and returning college students\, with around one in five undergraduates having legal dependents. Students who take care of children and other family members face greater barriers to education than their peers without caregiving responsibilities\, impacting their ability to access and complete a postsecondary credential\, with intergenerational implications. Increasing degree attainment among U.S. adults requires alleviating the barriers caregivers face—financial insecurity\, time poverty\, and decreased sense of belonging—improving their ability to complete a credential and to do so sooner with less debt. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Carrie R. Welton (Policy Strategist) and May Helena Plumb (Research Associate) explore recent data on caregiving students from the Fall 2024 Student Financial Wellness Survey and highlight strategies for institutions\, states\, and the federal government to invest in the modern learner.
